Henderson County was created in 1846 from Houston and
Nacogdoches Counties. Named for J. Pinckey Henderson, first Governor of Texas,
who was in office when the county was created.
Henderson County is located in East Texas between the
Neches and Trinity Rivers. It’s in a transitional region between East and
Central Texas. Athens, the largest city and county seat, is near the
geographical center of the county, at the intersection of State Highways 31 and
19. Henderson County is approximately sixty miles southeast of Dallas, on U.S.
Highway 175.
We have many large lakes in our county, some are very near
the city, and we are noted for our recreational advantages provided by these
many lakes. Major lakes in the county are Cedar Creek Reservoir on the
northwest and Lake Palestine on the southeast. Other lakes in our area include
Lake Athens, Callendar Lake, Echo Creek, Purtis Creek Lake, and
Richland-Chambers Reservoir.
Because of the temperate climate, location and natural
beauty, Henderson County has become a prime location for retirement. The
combined population is approximately 75,000 residents and growing fast. Great
festivals/local celebrations with a friendly hometown atmosphere are ongoing
throughout the year, as well as great fishing and boating!
